Tarantino comes across as spoilt and over-indulged as the result of his early success. I find his pornographic violence hugely distasteful.

Hi Tatiana...wow, great presentation!! And great to see you again! I'm a huge Tarantino fan....Pulp Fiction is still my favorite. In addition to the dialog I really like the photography he uses (the look, color grading, etc). I enjoyed your takes on his work and agree with you. I noticed that maybe you tried to make your onscreen content you filmed to be a bit like his 'look'? It worked well...although the shots with you, to me almost also had a bit of the vibe from "The Godfather" to it...which I thought was cool too. Anyway, thanks for another wonderful watch...take care!! CC

Tarantino's early films are truly outstanding, even revolutionary. His talent is unquestionable. His advice is good, as far as it goes. But Quentin has announced he will quit directing after his next film, even though he's only middle-aged and has passionately loved everything about motion pictures his entire life, and could easily make a film a year indefinitely, like Clint Eastwood, Woody Allen, Wes Anderson. So there's that. Don't kill me! I'm a fan. I had great hope for him after _Jackie Brown_ ! That being said, he's absolutely right about going right in and following your greatest joy or love. (Passion is necessary for certain activities but Joy is signpost on one's true Path.)

I had some questions about his retirement too I had read something not that long ago saying that Tarantino would be slowing down, he has however written and produced a great number of projects as well so maybe that’s what he’ll be doing too. Not sure. I really appreciate his earlier films, of his last I would say Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Thank you for watching!

One of the most interesting classes I attended while studying photography at the ICP was called "A Roll A Day" - For a semester I had to shoot a roll of film (36 images) a day, no excuses. It was such a great exercise in keeping my creativity going, overcoming doubts and fears. Just do it, just shoot it. Once you start to think that every shot has to be a potential portfolio shot, that is the moment you stop shooting, experimenting, being passionate.

Yes, when I started doing my street photography, I didn’t wait till I had everything right in the editing and vision, I just started shooting and slowly everything came together! Don’t get bogged down in so many details and don’t be working with so many different pieces of equipment that you never master any of them! I see a lot of photographers who are camera & lens collectors. And their work shows their lack of passion!

I've recently have had the algorithm send me down the street photography youtube rabbit hole. And though I enjoy the walkie talkie videos overall. I think seeing something like this and imagining the Pre Cleanup New York street photography as having more grit, but seeing a lot of younger folks still clinging to the nostalgia of shooting the old hunting grounds... It's just not there anymore. Everyone has their own motivations clearly. But overall the sort of cultural density that came out of the grit of specific cities in the 60's-80's can't be replicated and carving that new path somewhere else with this sort of sincerity is tough. I do take a lot away from starting with what you know. I don't know what sorts of ins he had in Haiti, Portugal, Italy or Japan... but a NY cabbie from NY probably knew where to look for action and movement. That kind of intimate knowledge is priceless.

There's something about seeing the work of a someone laid out like that. He put his entire soul and being into his art, and though his life is objectively heartbreaking, he sought out beauty to describe it. The beauty in the people and places he loved, and even the beauty in the capturing of all the ugly things. The stillborn, the ravens, the suffering animals. He had an eye for the things that resonate.

Terrific mini documentary here on a fascinating photographer. Sometimes I think if it wasn't for the internet, we never would've known about photographers Masahisa Fukase. His life story reminds me fo the 1989 Japanese film 'Black Rain' (not the one starring Michael Douglas) about a Japanese family trying to remain true too the social mores of the time, even after their country suffered a devastating attack and unbelievable losses. The photo at 2:56 is a personal favorite. The cat singing a debut with the singer on television is priceless. As with late poet Edgar Allan Poe, Fukase seemed to embrace melancholia the same way one embraces a lover. Several of Fukase's photographic projects such as his family portraits as 'archiving death' and photographing his still born child is what some would consider questionable. To quote an old military saying, 'if sailor/solider believes they're going to die in combat, that person will find a way to make if happen'. It seems to be true of Masahisa Fukase. It's unfortunate Fukase suffered that head injured which ended his photographic career. Perhaps his photos might be inspiration to future artists.

Thanks again for a beautifully produced and thought provoking video. Why people think like that I don’t know. I mean you could say that about people who engage in activities where they actually risk their lives but photography as a death wish is about as realistic as accountancy. Are photographers more likely to be alcoholic misanthropes? Is it just Japanese photographers? Is it to do with the war, or growing up in a cold, isolated place like Hokkaido? I think he was a photographer who had a certain personality that drove his photography in a certain direction. He wanted to use photography almost purely as self expression and maybe a way to document his understanding of his culture, the failure of ideas and technology to improve the world. Rather than destroying it, if anything, photography probably saved his life and gave it a meaning he could live with. He fell down because of alcohol. If he’d been a heavy smoker who died of cancer no one would have thought of saying photography destroyed his life.
